Vintage American cars, rum, cigars, sandy beaches, and a culture that you do not meet elsewhere. Cuba is a country that has recently begun to wake up after nearly 60 years of silence. That is why you must experience the real Cuba while it remains authentic. Havana boasts charming streets and plazas, or turquoise water of Varadero – this exciting country has attractions for all. Cuba is the destination of the future, and the recent revolution is made apparent with words like “Viva la Revolution”, murals of Che Guevara and the founder of the revolution, Fidel Castro.
Havana, or La Habana, is the capital of Cuba and undoubtedly a must see. Along Paseo del Prado, schoolchildren in uniforms play sports in the middle of the pedestrian street, and old American cars drive by with music flowing from their windows. A couple dances salsa on the sidewalk in front of their paladar – a popular dining experience in Cuba meaning a small, family-run restaurant. Havana is a city of history, and you can visit such as attractions as the beautiful Plaza Vieja, which is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. When darkness falls, the streets are emptied and the party moves to the beach road, Malecón Avenue. The road stretches along the coastline of Havana, and this is where the Cubans meet to gossip, dance and drink Santiago de Cuba rum directly from the bottle. Read more about Havana here ..
Adventure out on to the Hicacos peninsula, which is home to Varadero, and you will find yourself surrounded by the sea. Palm trees sway in the wind along 20 kilometers of white, sandy beaches. The water is a beautiful azure at the Gulf of Mexico, and 164 kilometers North is the Key West of Florida. Hotels here are conveniently located on the beach, and you can walk between the surf and the pool with a mojito in hand. Varadero is the perfect destination for those who want to experience Cuba in a relaxed and comfortable way. The beach is also called one of the world’s best, and we could not agree more.
Thousands of people are gathered at Cepedes Plaza in Santiago de Cuba, the Cuban flag waves in the air, screams of joy are heard from the crowd. It is January 1, 1959, and Fidel Castro goes to one of the City Hall’s balconies and proclaims that the Cuban Revolution has won. From this day almost 60 years ago, Cuba has been communist. Santiago De Cuba is the second largest city in the country and it is furthest to the south on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. Only about 60 kilometers away from Santiago De Cuba is famous American prison Guantanamo Bay, which has belonged to the United States since 1898. Beside the detention center, Guantanamo also boasts a small town, which has restricted access, and there is a myth among Cubans that it holds the only McDonald’s in the country.
On the western part of the island, you will drive along narrow roads, surrounded by greenery. Here, nature is in the forefront, and amazing cities are scattered amongst tobacco fields. In the city of Pinar Del Rio, you can visit rum distilleries where you can purchase rum, and see how it is made. There are also cigar factories where cigars are being rolled by hand. In Viñales, you can see the Mural De La Prehistoria, which is a colorful painting that adorns an entire rock wall, and took four years to complete. You can ride along the country roads on horseback and see farmers take care of their land, while bulls and chickens roam through their pastures.
Why not take a salsa lesson on your trip to Cuba? Across the country are many places where you can learn the famous steps, and night clubs where you can show case what you have practiced. Cuba is highly associated with salsa, and of course cigars and rum. Che Guevara’s favourite cigars were Montecristo, while Fidel Castro loved Cohiba. Cigars can be bought in all sizes, and for the beginner we recommend a Romeo and Julieta, as it is on the milder side. The Havana Club rum is the most well known, and can be enjoyed in a delicious mojito.
