After a short four-hour drive from the Grand Canyon, it is time to explore Antelope Canyon, located near the town of Page. While on your way to Page, we recommend you visit Horseshoe Bend, which is a beautiful stop on the road, as well as Lake Powell.
We highly recommend that you spend your second day in Antelope Canyon, which is the most visited in the area. Here you should take one of the organized tours, so you can experience the canyon close up in a whole new way. Discover the rays of light creeping down through the narrow gap when you walk down into the canyon between the wavy sandstone walls. TIP: Remember to book a tour from home, as they are often sold out.
In the Navajo language, the Upper Antelope Canyon is called “Tse bighanilini” which means “the place where water runs through rocks”, which is a very fitting name for the area. Several Indian tribes actually live in the area, and you can even book tours where the guide is the Indian Chief Tsosie. He plays a pan-pipe and tells extraordinary stories about the area.
(150 miles – 2-hours-and-32-minute drive)
Then it’s on to Bryce Canyon National Park, which is located in southwestern Utah. The park is located 2,500 meters above sea level and is 145 km2. Due to the slightly “isolated” location of the park, it does not have the same number of visitors as the larger and slightly more popular parks like theGrand Canyon. This just means that there are better opportunities to explore the area on your own, and feel a special closeness with nature.
Within the park lies the Bryce Canyon, which is a big “amphitheater,” where there is opportunity for exploring the canyon from above but also with the possibility of trips into the canyon.
You might want to spend one of the days taking an easier hike, where you go down into the canyon, and on the following day you can hike up to view the canyon from above. For dinner, head over to Ebeneezer’s Barn & Grill, where they serve authentic American BBQ. During dinner, you can enjoy a great stage show with cowboys swinging lassos and dancing around to John Denver.
(74 miles – 1-hour-and-20-minute drive)
Now it’s on to Zion National Park, which represents an area of 593 km2. The lowest point is 1,128 meters altitude, while the highest is 2,660 meters. Zion is an ancient Hebrew word meaning “holy place” or “place to flee to.” Like many of the U.S.’s national parks, it is a place that should not be missed. It’s beautiful, green and orange cliffs, and deep valleys are a sight for sore eyes. It is stunning, and you have the opportunity to experience Zion both from above and below. There are many hikes of varying difficulty, so there is truly something for everyone.
(298 miles – 4-hours-and-42-minute drive)
From here you head to Death Valley, the lowest point in the U.S. Here it is always warm, and is also where the warmest temperature was measured – at 56.7 degrees. Here you have a single night, and it won’t take long to discover why it’s called Death Valley. While in Death Valley, you should experience Badwater Basin, which originally got its name because of the high level of salt in the water, making it impossible to drink. The valley is no less than 100 meters below sea level, and is a great experience – even if it is desolate.
(293 miles – 5-hours-and-38-minute drive)
The time has come for Yosemite National Park, which is one of the largest and most famous natural parks located on this route – and in the western United States. The park contains over 4,000 different animal and plant species, not to mention the numerous waterfalls, granite cliffs, forests, desolate land, lakes and much more. If you are lucky (or unlucky) you can also encounter a bear in Yosemite, and you have the opportunity to experience this beautiful and large park with hiking paths of different difficulties.
It is a good idea to drive early in the morning, because it is very peaceful and beautiful in the park, and we recommend that you do not visit on the weekends, because many Americans plan their trip to the park on the weekends.
