California

This classic trip takes you through

the wonderful cities and nature parks!

California – Best of the West

The ultimate U.S. experience awaits in California, which is also known as “The Golden State”. Here you will find the best collection of everything that the U.S. has to offer, and you can combine your tour exactly the way you want. A perfect state to begin your U.S. adventure in, but also a perfect state to visit again.

In California, there is everything from exciting and magnificent big cities, such as Los Angeles, where luxury is paramount, and where the sun almost always shines, to lovely San Francisco, a more relaxed and cozy big city with steep roads and the well-known “San Francisco fog”, to the wild nature experiences in national parks, such as Yosemite and Sequoia, where the landscape is incredibly beautiful and overwhelming. California has both action-packed amusement parks that offer crazy adrenaline-kicks for the bold who dare to try, as well as gorgeous beaches that offer the opportunity for pure relaxation. California is best experienced on a road trip vacation, where you can drive on Highway 1 along the raw and unspoiled nature of the Pacific Ocean’s coastal line. Californians have a saying – “West Coast, best coast.” Book a trip today and find out why for yourself!

California’s great location means that Las Vegas in Nevada is not far away, which is definitely an eventful stop, or the Grand Canyon in Arizona, which can easily be a part of a complete tour.

Itinerary

DAY 1 - 5: LOS ANGELES

The trip starts in Los Angeles, where you have four nights. Los Angeles, the city of the stars, is full of celebrities from all over the world, as well as people who wish to become famous. Here, the sun always shines, the streets are busy, and there is room for everything. Among other things, you can visit Hollywood, which is almost a must, when you are in the area. If you wish to see where the real celebrities live, you can go on a tour – or drive around yourself and see their houses; you can also choose to follow the many stars on the Walk of Fame, which is a tourist magnet like no other, but nonetheless a must-see. If you want more relaxation, then Venice Beach and Santa Monica are beautiful areas that are worth a visit. At Venice Beach, you will find happy, roller skating girls in pastel colored clothed, boys on skateboards and happy couples on bikes – exactly as you see it in the movies. At Santa Monica Beach, there is a unique and cozy atmosphere with an amusement park on the pier and happy children, who are splashing in the water and eating ice cream.

You can, for example, use a day walking in the footsteps of the celebrities, visiting Hollywood and Beverly Hills, and driving down Rodeo Drive. Then, spend a day on the beaches, experience the unique atmosphere, and enjoy how wonderful they are. Then visit Universal Studios Hollywood and fell the adrenaline rush through your body. You can also see many of the famous sets from the popular series and movies that are produced in Hollywood. And don’t forget to visit The Happiest Place on Earth – Disneyland!

DAY 5 – 8: SAN DIEGO

(193 km/120 miles – a 2-hour drive)
The next three days you will stay in San Diego, which is located in Southern California near the Mexican border. Here, you can visit LEGOLAND®, which is a fun amusement park. It is located just north of San Diego and is definitely worth a visit. San Diego is also home to the popular SeaWorld, where you can experience the many stunning marine shows. If you like museums, then the world’s largest maritime museum, the USS Midway, is also located in San Diego. You will quickly notice that San Diego is a coastal city, which means that the atmosphere is also entirely different from that of the many other cities that California has to offer. Here, there is also gorgeous and warm beaches, such as Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.

DAY 8 – 9: LAKE HAVASU CITY

(486 km/302 miles – a 5-hour drive)
Now it is time to drive and see more of The West Coast’s beautiful scenery. The first stop is the world-famous Grand Canyon, and due to the long drive, we recommend a night in the pleasant Lake Havasu City. Originally, the city was a small, sleepy desert town, but this changed in the 1960’s when a business man from the city bought the now legendary London Bridge, which was sold in London. The bridge was taken apart stone by stone in London, numbered, sailed all the way to the US and driven across the county, whereupon it was reassembled across the river at Lake Havasu City – a fun story and definitely worth a visit. The city is located in the state of Arizona, close to the Colorado River and near the Parker Dam that connects California with Arizona. It forms a beautiful lake, where you can practice a number of different sports.

DAY 9 – 10: GRAND CANYON

(365 km/227 miles – a 3-hour-and-30-minute drive)

Your next stop will be at the wonderful Grand Canyon, which is considered to be one of the most impressive natural wonders in the entire world. The 1,800-meter-deep canyon lies in Arizona, close to California, and is a part of the national park of the same name. The Grand Canyon is one of the most beautiful and unique places in the U.S., with its amazing topography that just has to be seen.

You can, for example, spend a day on horseback and experience the Grand Canyon in a different and exciting way. You can also go rafting in the canyon, where you will get a different view of the national park, or go hiking in the national par, or even fly with a helicopter and get an amazing and unforgettable view of the canyon. The opportunities are many and so are the experiences.

DAY 10 - 13: LAS VEGAS

(440 km/275 miles – a 4-hour-and-10-minute drive)
After the nature experience, it is time to live wild and lavish, because you are going to Las Vegas, where nothing is too big, too wild, or too unattainable for anyone. The place where dreams come true, where small change become millions, and where you can still meet Elvis and Marilyn Monroe. Here, you have three days to explore the neon mecca and experience something that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Explore The Strip and visit Paris, Venice, and the Pyramid in just one day! Visit the casinos and experience the atmosphere there, and in the evening watch the magical and beautiful fountains that dance to opera music in front of Hotel Bellagio. Experience some of the endless shows that the nightlife of Las Vegas has to offer – musicals, concerts, magic shows. Everything that your heart desires!

From here, it is easy to drive to the Hoover Dam, where you can use half a day to experience the huge dam. Las Vegas is also a good place to update your wardrobe, because it has many large malls and outlets, where you can find American brands at cheap prices.

DAY 13 - 14: DEATH VALLEY

(225 km/140 miles – a 2-hour-and-10-minute drive)

Next stop is the lowest point in the US, which is found in the Death Valley National Park – a valley in the Mojave Dessert. The valley is especially known for its extremely hot weather, and it is also where the world’s highest temperature ever has been recorded. In July of 1913, the thermometer showed 56.7 Celsius at Furnace Creek in Death Valley.

The lowest point in Death Valley, called Badwater Basin, is 80-100 meters below sea level. The place got its name, because the small amount of water that can be found there cannot be drunk due to its high salinity. This is why the first people who traveled through there called it Badwater Basin. In Death Valley National Park, you will experience sights such as Devil’s Golf Course, Dante’s View, Zabriskie Point and other breathtaking viewpoints. In the valley, you will experience quiet, amazing, and completely barren scenery, which will definitely make you understand why the valley is called Death Valley.

DAY 14 - 16: YOSEMITE

(372 km/231 miles – a 4-hour-and-30-minute drive)
Today you are off to another stunning national park. With two days in Yosemite National Park, you will have plenty of opportunities to experience the lovely scenery that the park has to offer. It is absolutely one of the most beautiful parks in the U.S., and that says a lot! Yosemite Valley is one of the most impressive places in the park, and the Native Americans used to call the valley Awooni, which means “open mouth.” An open mouth is definitely what you will definitely have when you explore the more than 3,000 square kilometer large park. With over 4,000 different plant and animal species, there is something for everyone to see and experience. There are waterfalls, rivers, mountains, granite, woods, barren areas – and much, much more. It is impossible for you not to be enriched with experiences during your two-day-stay at Yosemite National Park.

DAY 16 - 19: SAN FRANCISCO

(300 km/187 miles – a 4-hour drive)
After having seen a few national parks, it is time to drive to the Pacific coast and the city of San Francisco, where you will be spending three days. The city is very different from the other big cities that California has to offer. San Francisco has a completely different and unique atmosphere that cannot be described, but has to be experienced to understand. The hilly streets, the well-known cable cars, the much-spoken-of San Francisco fog that often dominates the mornings, and of course the red suspension bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, which is the most famous landmark of the city.

Go to the prison island, Alcatraz, where it is said that only three people have managed to escape from – but they were never found alive – and enjoy an audio tour of the penitentiary, where you will visit the prison cells, the canteen and much more. Use some time exploring neighborhoods such as the Castro District, a gay neighborhood, where the rainbow-colored flag can be found everywhere, and where the atmosphere is just really friendly. Height-Ashbury is the neighborhood where the hippy movement started in the 1960s, and you can visit it today to experience the still laid-back vibe. Visit Fisherman’s Wharf and eat some clam chowder in Boudin’s famous sourdough bread bowl – it tastes heavenly. Then experience Pier 39, where all the sea lions lie and sunbathe. Chinatown is also worth a visit, because it is inhabited by the highest number of Chinese people living outside of China, which is why it is also one of the largest Chinatowns in the world. Here, you can find good, Chinese specialties such as snake heads and Chinese herbs, and a special, but good atmosphere.

If you are thirsty for or interested in wine, you can also take a short trip north to Napa Valley, which is a wine mecca like no other. Here, you can go visit a vineyard, see how the wine is made, and of course attend both lectures and wine tastings

DAY 19 - 20: MONTEREY

(200 km/120 miles – a 2-hour drive)
Now, the tour goes south on Highway 1 to Monterey, which offers a lot of beautiful scenery along the way. You will definitely be making some stops – simply to have a look and take some pictures. If you get hungry along the way, stop in Davenport for some delicious lunch with a view at Whale City Bakery Bar & Grill. On the way to Monterey, you will pass Big Basin Redwood State Park, where you can stop and go for a hike, or simply step out of your car and look up and the world’s tallest trees. They are sure to take your breath away.

Monterey is a friendly port, where you should visit the popular Monterey Bay Aquarium or go whale watching on the Pacific Ocean. The trip usually takes around 3 hours, and it offers plenty of opportunities to watch different types of whales depending on the season. Finish your day off with dinner at the very first Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant! Answer Forest Gump trivia while you wait for your food.

On the way south from Monterey, you will discover the Big Sur area, which is one of the most beautiful sights along Highway 1. From here, you drive on to San Simeon and the rich-man-castle, Hearst Castle, where you can get a tour.

The tour ends in Santa Barbara, which is a small, cozy town out by the sea on the American West Coast, where you can visit the gorgeous beaches and enjoy the cozy town, while you reflect on all of the impressions that the tour has left on you, before you return home.
